*Disclaimer* the majority of the following is a summary of where I was at before I started getting committed :)
I don't have a repeating swing (stating the obvious). Inconsistency plagues me like, well, the plague. I can hit a drive down the middle on one hole and I can smother it horribly or top it on others! I can hit crisp flighted irons to tight pins, I can hit them 50 yds too when I hit about 6 inches behind the ball! I can putt and I can't putt. I have had 24 putts in a round I have had over 36 in others! I've holed 50 footers and missed 2 footers. And please. Don't. Even. Ask. About. Pitching. Over. Bunkers. LOL. I've shot 5 under my handicap going out and 8 over coming back, and vice versa. I have won weekend comps and finished last in them! I can walk off with 40 points or 20 something, I've hit shots that make me feel like I own the course and I have hit ones that were so bad I just want to rewind time and play it again!
My golf if nothing, is interesting, frustrating, exotic, sometimes hilarious for my regular playing partners (we have our own mini-trophy that gets "awarded" for the worst shot of the day, which is agreed at the end of the round over a drink - invariably it stays at my house...), it is Heinz beans golf - 57 varieties in any given day. Why, oh why do I enjoy it so much, it really is illogical. Painting a pretty dark picture here, so to offset that my great shots are just that - great, but they are as rare as a 2 minute rump steak...
If golf was my job and I performed like the above I would either have been fired or be looking hard for a new line of work! As it is, you know what? I am not looking for a new 'hobby' (it's not really a hobby, it's more than that but I can't find the right word), I just want to play better golf...
In Ben Hogan's book, 'The five fundamentals of golf' he made a significant statement along the lines of 'anyone with reasonable fitness and ability should break 80!' At this stage I am not of reasonable fitness or ability, and to be quite honest that grates me! Bear in mind he made this statement long, long before persimmon woods even, let alone the composites we have these days and the advances in golf ball and iron technology!
If any of the above resonates with you or your playing partners then follow my blog and I encourage you to post comments. I will be blogging almost every day and updating links and info that helps me. So join this average golfer and share my journey and experiences of what I work at and whether it helps or not in my golfing ambition!
M
an excellent read and sums up most golfers I would think
